Entry #8: 70s/80s Throwback & Invitation
Chase
Similar, but different than Billy May is the group Chase. A jazz-rock fusion band, made up of three trumpeters, vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. The group was created by Bill Chase, who studied trumpet at the New England Conservatory before switching over to the Berklee College of Music. They are best known for the hit single from 1971 "Get It On".
Another track featuring lots of exceptional trumpet playing is the track "Run Back to Mama".
Chicago (Transit Authority)
A band that needs no introduction, but I'll give one anyway. Chicago, an American rock band formed in 1967 in the city of Chicago. They describe themselves as "rock and roll band with horns", with their songs often also combine elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop music. The group began their career as The Big Thing, then transitioned to Chicago Transit Authority in 1968, before finally shortening it to Chicago in 1969.
"If You Leave Me Now" may not feature the most brass playing in their career, but it does feature a horn section! As for who played the horn parts... nobody knows, it is quite the mystery in the horn world.
Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Blood, Sweat & Tears (also known as "BS&T") is an American jazz rock music group known for combining a brass section with a rock band. Their success is often paralleled with that of Chicago.
There song "Spinning Wheels" also features a brass section playing, alongside the usual guitar, bass, and drums.
Invitation
Finally, the next track off the Billy May Big Fat Brass Album, Invitation, an original track written by Bronislau Kaper and Paul Francis Webster.
Until next time!
